About us
Girlhood Reclaimed has been set up as a response to the growing dominance of misogynist narratives and the impact it has on young women, girls and non-binary folk. Misogyny and its normalisation of harmful ideas that perpetuate gender inequality continue to operate as a way of subordinating all those who are assigned female at birth, as well as transfeminine people, impacting their sense of safety, limiting their space for action, their freedoms and access to the fullness of girlhood.
At Girlhood Reclaimed we focus on those young people that misogynistic narratives aim directly to subordinate and harm: girls and young women, including trans girls and young women, as well as any non-binary youth who might see themselves in the work that we do (we appreciate that many may not). Although our own focus is on girlhood, we appreciate the work being done by others to support trans and non-binary youth, as well as to support boys and young men to undo the harm that is also being done to them by extreme misogyny.
Girlhood Reclaimed aims
to explore and deepen our understanding of the impacts of misogyny on young people through feminist research, project-based work and training
to create safe spaces for young women, girls and non-binary folk to make sense of these impacts and voice the harm misogyny is causing them
to work collaboratively with young people to explore how they can reclaim joy in their girlhood.
We believe that sense-making spaces and engagement with the reclaiming of joy will support young people in undoing some of the harm caused by these dominant narratives as well as empower them to engage with feminist activism.
We understand that “girlhood” and reclaiming joy will mean many things to many people. Our approach is grounded in intersectional feminism that seeks to explore and understand the intersecting impacts of dominant misogynistic narratives in the lives of all those who identify with girlhood. We believe that safe spaces for exploring the impact of misogyny must make space for a diversity of experiences.
We also believe in a whole community approach to our work, so we offer training for adults working with and caring for young people, supporting them to deepen their understanding of misogyny as well as explore ways in which they can disrupt the harm that it causes within their contexts.
All of the work we offer is delivered by Rae, whose background in youth work and women’s mental health, and work within the VAWG sector for many years means she brings not only experience but passion to see an end to the gender-based violence. Rae has extensive experience in delivering empathic training and youth work that is empowering and creates space for people to not only deeply understand the impact of gender-based violence but engage with its impact on their own lives and those around them.
